Joan Baldwin

Biography:
I have spent most of my adult life in Charlotte, N.C. but I am originally from Ohio. I lived with my family in Europe for four years in the 1970’s, in London and Milan. Since 1995 I have lived and worked in the Boston area. I graduated from Purdue University with a B.A. in art education and have supplemented my college education with over 40 hours of specific college art courses, as well as a variety of seminars and workshops.. I started my career as an illustrator of retail products, specializing in furniture. As I have developed as a fine artist over the years, I have brought the drawing and design skills that I developed in my illustrative work into my oil paintings and pastels. My studio is in Waltham Mass, at River Street Artists. I am represented in Boston by Kingston Gallery.

Statement:
My subject matter evolved over the years from realistic room scenes. Chairs or rather chair-creatures populate the lyrical landscapes in my present paintings. Interiors behind actual windows are the settings for the furniture in my pastel series, which I’ve named my Voyeur series. I implicate my furniture subjects in human relationships and the titles are an integral and important part of each piece. I would describe my work as surreal with a sense of humor.
