Subject matter or aboutness are conundrums for an abstract painter, but even abstract painters react to, invite, or engage in conversations with one muse or another. In my case, and for now, that muse has been the woods. My gypsy soul, to a great extent has been fed for the last decade by long walks in the woods. Nothing like raising a family to ground a wanderer. We are talking ten thousand miles. Behind my house. In the suburbs. I am interested in those nearly unseen shifts- between alive and asleep, between winter and spring, the flick of a bird, a crust of ice, a leaf almost mulch, a glimmer of red, the sleight of hand in the passage of time. At the heart of it, I am a mark maker. This recent work includes paint, oil stick, collage and drawings on rice paper, wood, and canvas.
