Joshua Winer

Artist Statement/Biography:
I have been making murals since my college days at Yale. My graduate school experience studying architecture at Harvard helped me learn to create artwork that is integrated with the built environment.  I’ve been creating works of public art, mostly murals but also mosiacs and mobiles, for twenty years. Many of these are in Boston, Cambridge, and surrounding towns. For the last 5 years I have also been working on a castle project in France, doing the painted decoration and murals in all the public and private rooms on a periodic basis. This summer I created a historic mural in Chicago celebrating local history.
In all of these projects, my first goal is to create a work of art that becomes a living part of the environment for which it is created.

I also teach mural design, mural painting, and mosaic design and fabrication at RISD, Montserrat College of Art and Mass College of Art as a visiting instructor.

One of the most enjoyable types of commissioned art work that I do involves visiting schools, creating artwork with the students for their school environments. I’ve worked with about a dozen schools, public and private and at all levels, creating murals, mosaics and mobiles. The energy of the communities that join into these projects is inspiring, and the
results are usually full of life and the creative spirit.
